Ian and John are both natives of Liverpool and are keen for the city to develop a thriving video, film and music industry.

Ian @ Cottonfield Films

Ian fell in love with films at the age of four, after his Dad took him to see Star Wars at the Plaza Cinema, Crosby. Later in life, while working as an engineer, Ian began studying scriptwriting, videography and film theory at the University Of Liverpool.

After completing these studies, and having a short film he edited shown at the Odeon Cinema, Liverpool, he began working as a freelance videographer in 2003 and has set up Cottonfield Films to realise his ambition of spending his life making films.

Ian’s main strengths are scriptwriting, camera operation and editing, though he also has skills in sound recording, lighting, as well as producing and directing.

He has successfully delivered several film-making courses, working with young people from all backgrounds to produce original films, shot in high quality digital video.

“It’s fantastic to see the young people’s confidence grow from the start of the course to the end. There are some talented young people out there who are good enough to work in the media industry, they just need to be given the chance.”

john @ Cottonfield Films

Music has always been the main passion in John’s life and he’s been playing guitar and bass in various bands since the early 1990’s, when he also studied music at College. John has also worked as a Senior Finance Assistant for a national charity.

His eclectic taste in music naturally led to an interest in film scores and, in setting up Cottonfield Films, has taken the next step in realizing his life-long ambitions.

While John’s main strengths are in guitar and bass guitar, he also has skills in piano/keyboard, banjo, mandolin and also provides backing vocals for the bands he plays in. His musical versatility means he can play in a variety of styles and is also fluent in digital music software, which is a favourite with the young people on the courses.

“It’s great to see the kids take to it like a duck to water… I’ve found myself remembering things I’d forgotten, so thanks, kids!”
